Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1947, Matthew Naughtin is a composer, violinist, violist, program annotator and Music Librarian who started writing music at the same time he began violin lessons at age 11. He left Omaha for Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where he studied violin performance, theory and composition and was awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance in 1970. He then taught and performed in the Chicago area for several years before returning to Omaha in 1977. There he played in the Omaha Symphony Orchestra from 1977 - 1997 and served as the Symphony's Music Librarian, Program Annotator, Resident Composer and Musical Arranger. He was appointed Music Librarian of the San Francisco Ballet in 1997 and now lives and works in San Francisco. The proud father of a daughter and a son, Matt has recently become a proud grandfather as well. Matt's original orchestral compositions and arrangements have gained wide recognition and are played all across America on Christmas, Pops, Youth and Family concerts. His orchestral arrangements have been performed and recorded by countless orchestras, including the Boston Pops, Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, Denver Symphony, Omaha Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Cheyenne Symphony, Des Moines Symphony, Elmhurst Symphony, Florida West Coast Symphony, Fort Collins Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Lake Forest Symphony, Lincoln Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Marion Philharmonic, Modesto Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Quad City Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony, Utah Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Civic Youth Orchestra, Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, Omaha Area Youth Orchestra and the United States Air Force and Coast Guard Bands. He has written two ballet scores for children: Ferdinand, based on the classic children's story by Munro Leaf, premiered in October 1996, and The Angel Dances, premiered in February 1998 by the students of Omaha choreographer Robin Welch. Matt has also written a children's opera, The Story of Millicent Mouse, in collaboration with conductor Ernest Richardson, which was first performed in 1998 on an Omaha Symphony Family Concert. His sing-alongs let children enjoy singing their favorite songs with an orchestra, and kids still remember Matt's piece on themes from video games, Mario! Jump!, as well as Rollercoaster, Cinco de Mayo, The Penguin Stomp and the Loony Tunes Fugue. His works for narrator and orchestra, Journey to Lenkai, based on an African folk story, Amazon Journey, a musical depiction of the South American rain forest, Wakinyan Tanka, based on a Lakota Sioux legend, and Dragons, a setting of poems by Jack Prelutsky, have been performed on many youth and family concerts. 184 Funston Ave. #12 San Francisco, CA, 94118 Phone: (415) 831-8058
